To Lead is to Be an Example:

To Lead is to Be an Example: Your Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Have you ever heard someone say, “Do what I say, not what I do”?

The hard truth is that people don’t follow what we say—they follow what we do. Leadership begins with who we are. Before you can lead others effectively, you must first be an example worth following.

To lead well, you need to set an example in your speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Leadership is not about perfection, but about being on a journey of growth and allowing others to see that growth in you.

Paul encouraged Timothy—a young leader in the church—to focus less on his youth and more on his example. Leadership effectiveness doesn’t depend on age, experience, or position; it depends on character.

Here’s the key idea: People will follow who you are far more than what you say.

Five Areas to Grow as an Example

  1. Speech: Your words reflect your heart (Luke 6:45). Speak with kindness, encouragement, and truth.

    • Practical Tip: Pause before you speak and ask, “Will my words build up or tear down?”

  2. Conduct: How you live matters. Integrity means living the same way in public and private.

    • Practical Tip: Evaluate your actions: “Do my choices align with the values I lead with?”

  3. Love: Leadership is about relationships. Love others with patience, kindness, and humility (1 Corinthians 13).

    • Practical Tip: Show love through small acts—a kind word, listening well, or offering support.

  4. Faith: Trust God in everything, and let your faith inspire others.

    • Practical Tip: Pray daily and ask God for wisdom and direction as you lead.

  5. Purity: Lead from a clean heart. Purity begins in your thoughts and overflows into your actions.

    • Practical Tip: Spend time with God, asking Him to renew your mind and heart.

Practical Takeaways:

  1. Identify one area where you want to set a better example.

  2. Write down a practical step to grow in that area this week.

  3. Pray: “God, help me lead by example. Let my life reflect your goodness and truth.”

Final Encouragement:
Leadership starts with who you are. By growing in these five areas, you can lead others toward Christlikeness—not just through your words, but through your life.
